Unexplained Figure
Historic Fort Wayne, April 5th, 2008

This picture has been the source of a great amount of discussion amongst the members of MPI, and the subject of intense examination. A pair of investigators was touring the grounds of Historic Fort Wayne hours before an investigation was scheduled to begin and snapped this picture in one of the fort's many sally ports. At the time, they did not notice anything unusual about the image; later that evening, when examining the photos taken earlier in the day, they noticed the figure seen above.

In an attempt to determine the origin of the figure in the photograph, MPI returned to the fort the next day and took a series of comparison shots in order to provide reference images to be used for analysis of the image. Using the same camera which took the original picture, and using the picture's EXIF data to obtain the time the picture was taken and camera settings used to take the original photographs, team members were able to duplicate the conditions existing in the above picture as closely as possible.

After exhaustive analysis, two possible explanations presented themselves as the mostly likely source of the picture. The first possibility is that the image in the picture is that of one of the investigators present, and that when examining the pictures on site, it was not noticed that the investigator was in the frame when the photograph was originally taken. The second possible explanation is that the image is evidence of that rarest of events, photographic evidence of a legitimate full-bodied apparition.

In the end, the results of analysis of the photograph proved inconclusive. Some aspects of the picture were duplicated through the test images taken, while some proved impossible to explain. Thus, MPI cannot with certainty call this picture proof of paranormal activity, but neither can it completely rule out the possibility. We present this picture here for you, the reader, to draw your own conclusions, and invite your comments and discussion about this and any other matters in the official MPI Forums.
